Guide to Transferring Ownership of a Shopify Store
Introduction
Before initiating a transfer, it’s essential to understand the implications and requirements for both internal and external ownership changes:
Key Considerations Before Starting the Process
- Only the current store owner can initiate a transfer.
- Each store has only one owner. Admin roles can differ, but ultimate control lies with the owner.
- For organizations, there must be at least one store; removing the only store deletes the organization.
- Billing responsibility passes to the new owner, even if thresholds haven’t been met at transfer time.
- Permissions may change: Store permissions are retained, but organization-level access may be lost and need review.
Preparations Prior to Transfer
Taking a few preparatory steps ensures a smooth transition for both parties:
Administrative and Financial
- Update business contact information (email, phone, address).
- Export billing and payout history for your records.
- Update billing, payout, and notification email details to the new owner.
- Ensure your Shopify store is up to date and functioning properly.
- Review any contracts, third-party services, and domain ownership for reassignment.
Technical
- If you use Shopify Payments, update associated bank accounts and tax info.
- For third-party payment providers (e.g., PayPal), ensure account ownership is transferred or new details are set.
- If you have Shopify Balance or are using Shopify Capital or Credit, these services may limit your ability to transfer ownership.
Step-by-Step: Changing Ownership to an Existing User
If the new owner already has a user account within your store or organization:
- Go to Settings > Users in your Shopify admin.
- Click the name of the current store owner (you).
- Under Roles, click the horizontal menu next to Store owner, then select View stores.
- Choose the store to be transferred.
- In the Store owner section, click Change ownership.
- Enter the new owner’s email (must be an existing user).
- Click Change store ownership and follow the authentication steps.
Step-by-Step: Transferring Ownership Outside the Organization
To transfer ownership to someone outside your store or organization:
- Go to Settings > General in your Shopify admin.
- Under Organizations and store transfers, click Manage.
- Select Transfer store to a new owner outside your business, then click Continue.
- Authenticate your account if prompted.
- Enter the email address of the new owner.
- Click Transfer. The new owner will receive an email to accept the transfer.
For the New Owner
- They will receive an email to Get Started.
- Upon login, they can choose to:
- Add the store to an existing organization,
- Create a new organization, or
- Keep it as a standalone store.
Final Considerations
- Legal Agreements: When selling your store, seek legal help to draft a contract of sale outlining all terms and obligations.
- Data Retention: Make sure to back up important data and identify records you'll need to keep.
- Transition Plan: Onboarding a new owner may take days or weeks depending on the business complexity. Prepare documentation or training if necessary.
